Abstract

Impaction is a condition of a tooth to be unsuccessful to erupt due to lack of space in the dental arch. Maxillary and
mandibular third molars, and maxillary canine teeth often impact. The purpose of this study was to obtain an
overview information about distribution and the use of panoramic and periapical radiology technique on
examination of mandibular third molar. Samples were obtained by consecutive sampling technique. The study was
conducted on a number of 421 visitors of Radiology Clinic of the hospitals which this research done in March and
April, 2012. The results showed the periapical technique percentage 25.7% on March, and 31.7% on April; average
28.7%. Panoramic technique was 74.3% on March, and 68.3% on April; average 71.3%. From those results, it was
concluded that compared to periapical techniques, panoramic technique was predominantly used by the dentist to
analyze the mandibular third molar impaction
