Abstract
One of the orthodontic treatment goals is to correct malocclusion in order to get a
healthy occlusion functionally and esthetically. Facial esthetics is greatly influenced
by soft tissue facial profile. The aim of the study was to know the relationship between
the convexity degree of skeletal and soft tissue facial profiles. A sample of 50
cephalometric radiographs of untreated individuals (32 female, 18 males) was
obtained. Criteria for sample selection comprised were aged over 17 years, never
undergone orthodontic treatment, Makassarese and/or Buginese of ancestry, and the
presence of complete teeth from the left through the right first molars. The following
angular measurements were performed on lateral cephalograms: the skeletal
convexity degree (N-A-Pog) and the soft tissue convexity degree (n-no-pog), based on
the Subtelny’s analysis. The data was analyzed statistically by using independent t-test
and correlation test. The results were as the mean values of skeletal convexity degree
were 167.44º (male) and 166.53º (female), and the mean values of soft tissue convexity
degree were 159.05
o
(male) and 162.77
o
(female)Conclusion of the study is there was
a significant correlation between degree of skeletal and soft tissue convexity.
