Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolicdisease that is closely associated with periodontal disease, particularly chronic periodontitis. The bidirectionalrelationship between diabetes and periodontitis ischaracterized by increased blood glucose levels that canaggravate inflammation of periodontal tissues, whileperiodontal infection can worsen glycemic control. Purpose :to determine the effect of non-surgical periodontal treatmenton changes in fasting blood glucose levels in patients withtype 2 diabetes mellitus. Research Methods: using a pretest-posttest comparative clinical study design involving 31 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with chronicperiodontitis. Subjects underwent non-surgical periodontaltreatment in the form of scaling and root planing, withmeasurements of fasting blood glucose levels, oral hygieneindex (OHI-S), and periodontal pocket depth before and aftertreatment. Data were analyzed using paired t-test. Results:There was a significant decrease in fasting blood glucoselevels with an average decrease of 17.42 mg/dL (10.84%) after treatment (p<0.05). In addition, there was a significantincrease in oral hygiene status with the percentage of goodcategories increasing from 12.90% to 96.77%. Periodontalpocket depth also decreased significantly by 0.30 mm (10.86%) after the intervention. Conclusion: It was found thatnon-surgical periodontal treatment contributed significantlyto the improvement of periodontal condition and reduction offasting blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This treatment can be part of a multidisciplinaryapproach in managing diabetes mellitus to improveperiodontal health and optimize glycemic control.
