Abstract
Objective: This editorial review synthesizes key findings from 15 articles in the August 2025 issue of the Journal of Dentomaxillofacial Science, spanning basic science, clinical research, epidemiology, and dental public health.
Methods: The studies were clustered into five thematic domains: diabetes, inflammation, and periodontal therapy; craniofacial growth and genetic determinants; oral pathology and congenital anomalies; community dentistry and interventions; and clinical innovations.
Results: Notable findings include the immunomodulatory and antibacterial effects of gum arabic in diabetic periodontitis, the radioprotective potential of mangosteen pericarp extract, and the lack of correlation between ACTN3 gene polymorphisms and skeletal malocclusion. Epidemiological analyses revealed a low recurrence rate of exophytic oral lesions and a higher prevalence of cleft cases in Indonesia than in Japan. Non-surgical periodontal treatment improves glycaemic control in patients with type two diabetes. Salivary alpha-amylase levels showed a weak correlation with orthodontic pain perception. Art therapy and animated audio-visual methods were equally effective in improving children's oral health knowledge. A survey highlighted knowledge gaps among Indonesian dentists regarding the use of portable dental X-ray devices. The relationship between BMI and dental caries is complex and multifactorial. Case reports have demonstrated successful odontoma excision under local anaesthesia and management of radix entomolaris during endodontic treatment.
Conclusions: This editorial review emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary approaches and the integration of basic science, clinical care, and public health strategies to advance oral health.
