Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the combination effects of physical activity (structured training) and UV-B exposure on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels and assess their association with oral health and cognitive function.
Materials and methods: This study utilized male Wistar rats (3-4 months old, average body weight 250-350 g). The rats were divided into three groups: (K) control group and (P) exercise groups with or without ultraviolet B (UV-B) exposure. The exercise-treated groups underwent treadmill running for 30 minutes per session, divided into three sessions. Following the intervention, the rats were euthanized, and intracardiac blood samples (5 mL serum per rat) were collected for BDNF analysis via Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).
Result: The Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post-hoc Mann-Whitney U tests, shows Significant differences between groups (p < 0.005). The most pronounced increases in BDNF levels were noted in the WO group (584.157 pg/mL on day 14) and the WO-UV-B group (541.023 pg/mL on day 28).
Conclusion: Physical activity under exposure to ultraviolet B light is effective in increasing serum BDNF levels and maintaining Oromaxillofacial and cognitive function in the elderly.
