Abstract
Background: Early Childhood Caries affects the quality of life of children and is still a problem in Indonesia. Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is strongly connected to parenting style (PS), which is how parents guide their kids and help them develop their character. There are three parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. Purpose: The impact of PS on the severity of ECC. Methods: 30 students from South Jakarta's Tat Twam Asi Kindergarten and Kalpataru Kindergarten were selected through purposive sampling for this analytical observational study using a cross-sectional design. Collection of ECC data utilizing the def-t index by intraoral examination and completion of the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) by parents. Data were examined using descriptive statistics, the Chi-Square test, and the Spearman Rank correlation test. Results: The study indicated that the predominant category of parenting style was authoritarian, including 80%, with a significant incidence of early childhood caries at 56.7%. Chi-square test results: p = 0.029; Spearman rank test R² = 17.06% with p = 0.045. Conclusion: The majority of parents exhibit authoritative parenting styles associated with severe early childhood caries (ECC); there exists a substantial correlation between parenting styles (PS) and ECC, with authoritative parenting styles accounting for 17.06% of the variance in ECC severity.
