Abstract
Objective: To analyze correlations between the Oral Hygiene Behavior Index (OHB Index) and the plaque index, salivary flow rate, and relative quantification of Veillonella parvula in an Islamic boarding school.
Material and Method: A total of 49 male and 52 female students aged 12-14 years attending an Islamic Boarding School in Depok, West Java, were included in this study. The participants were clinically examined using the Greene and Vermillion Debris Index to determine their unstimulated salivary flow rates (ml/min). A real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to quantify the expression of Veillonella parvula, and an oral hygiene behavior questionnaire, the Oral Hygiene Behavior Index (OHB lndex)-was used to assess oral hygiene maintenance.
Results: There was a significant correlation between the OHB Index and salivary flow rate (r = .21, p = .03); however, no correlations were found between the OHB Index, plaque index, and relative expression of salivary Veillonella parvula.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that there is no linear relationship between the OHB Index, plaque index, and relative expression of salivary Veillonella parvula; however, there is a potential relationship between the OHB Index and unstimulated salivary flow rates.
