Effect of ethanol intake on bone remodeling process during orthodontic treatment in male wistar rats
Abstract
Objective: Toxic substances such as alcohol are consumed by many patients during orthodontic force application. These pharmacologically active substances may inadvertently inhibit tooth movement, cause unwanted root resorption or lead to loss of periodontal and bone attachment by modulating molecular and cellular processes that enable orthodontic tooth movement. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the expression of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1) and TGF-β in the bone remodeling process during orthodontic treatment due to the influence of alcohol intake. Material and Methods: Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to two groups: control group (CG) = non-exposed to ethanol intake (n = 10), and Experimental Group (EG) = alcohol intake (n = 10). Ethanol administration was carried out for 3 days and 7 days according to the subgroups. Measurement of tooth movement in experimental animals was carried out, then killed, then preparations were made and Immunohistochemical (IHC) examination to calculate IL-1 and TGF-β expression, then data analysis using independent t test.
Results: Statistical test results with independent sample t-test showed that there was a significant difference in IL-1 and TGF-β expression between the control group and the treatment group with a p value <0.05.
Conclusion: There is an effect of ethanol on IL-1 and TGF-β expression during the alveolar bone remodeling process in orthodontic tooth movement.
Keywords: Alveolar bone remodeling, ethanol, IL-1, orthodontic tooth movement, TGF-β.
