Abstract

Objective: This study examined the association between monthly income and the characteristics of patients receiving endodontic treatment, considering general and dental health status, Health-Related Quality of Life, and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life using the Short-Form (SF-8) and newly developed Oral Health-related Endodontic Patient’s Quality of Life (OHQE) scales in patients with irreversible pulpitis and pulp necrosis.

Materials and methods: This study comprised 131 patients diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis and pulp necrosis. Data regarding the patient’s background, medical history, and dental history were collected. Monthly income was divided into a lower group (<210 USD) and a higher group (³210 USD). The SF-8 and OHQE scales were administered three times to each patient: before and after root canal treatment; and two weeks following root canal treatment. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to assess the predictive outcome of both groups.

Results: The patients consisted of 62 (47.3%) with irreversible pulpitis, and 69 (52.7%) with pulp necrosis 48 (36.6%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed significant correlations between monthly income, university graduation (p=0.027), and the OHQE (psychological subscale) score, with a p-value of 0.004 in patients with irreversible pulpitis; and the pulp necrosis group showed significant correlations between monthly income, age (p=0.015); university graduation (p=0.004); and job (p=0.010).

Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between monthly income and the psychological state of patients who suffer from orofacial pain owing to irreversible pulpitis. The Indonesian government may consider these findings to improve the national healthcare system and promote economic stability in the country.
