About Forest and Society
Forest and Society is an open-access, peer-reviewed international journal published by Hasanuddin University. We swiftly publish articles online, with printed versions issued biannually. The journal invites interdisciplinary scholarly contributions with a focus on Southeast Asia, including comparative works relevant to the region.
Aims and Scope
Forest and Society promotes research that makes clear conceptual and methodological contributions such as:
... particularly research engaging with people, land, and forest.
While our geographical focus is on Southeast Asia, we actively encourage submissions that offer comparative analyses across regions.

Journal History
Forest and Society was founded in 2016 and first published in April 2017. The journal has established a strong scholarly presence, achieving indexing in Scopus in its launch year and in the Web of Science Emerging Sources Citation Index from Volume 2 (2018).
A significant milestone was reached in 2020, when the journal evolved into the Forest and Society Research Group (FSRG) at Universitas Hasanuddin. This transformation established us as an open, critical, and progressive epistemic community dedicated to decolonizing perspectives on forest, land, and society.
While our geographical focus is on Southeast Asia, we actively encourage submissions that offer comparative analyses across regions.
Capacity Building & Innovative Formats
Our mission extends beyond publication. We have conducted numerous writing workshops in places like Tanah Papua, Sulawesi, and Vietnam to support early-career researchers and foster new partnerships.
To diversify scholarly discourse, we introduced Policy Forums, Notes from the Field, and Methodological Engagement. These formats welcome contributions from policymakers and practitioners, facilitating the co-production of knowledge.
FStival & FSIC
FStival Volume I (2023) engages scholar-activists, artists, policy practitioners, and local communities, creating a dynamic platform for dialogue on emerging regional issues.
Forest and Society International Conference (FSIC) (2024) provides a forum for scholars to present research findings in a scientific format and receive feedback and networking opportunities.
Publishing Frequency
Articles are published online immediately upon acceptance, then compiled into bi-annual printed issues. We also publish Special Issues and Special Sections upon request.
