General Information

What is Forest and Society?
Forest and Society is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Hasanuddin. We promote interdisciplinary research on the relations between people, land, and forest, with a focus on Southeast Asia and comparative regional studies.
Is Forest and Society indexed in Scopus and Web of Science?
Yes. Forest and Society is currently indexed in Scopus (Q1) and the Web of Science Core Collection (ESCI). We are also indexed in DOAJ, Google Scholar, Crossref, and SINTA.
How often does Forest and Society publish issues?

Forest and Society publishes two issues per year (June and December).

However, we operate a continuous publication model. Once an article has completed the peer review, copyediting, and final proof stages, it is published online immediately and assigned to the nearest upcoming issue. This ensures that your research is accessible to the global community without delay.

Platform Migration & Submissions

What is the current status of the journal's platform migration?
Forest and Society has successfully migrated to a new publishing platform. Our new official website is now https://scholarhub.unhas.ac.id/fs. The previous OJS site remains as a permanent archive for Volumes 1-9 (2017-2025).
Where should I submit my NEW manuscript?
All NEW manuscript submissions must be submitted through our new editorial system:
https://www.editorialmanager.com/forsoc/default.aspx
The previous OJS website is now CLOSED for new submissions.
What about manuscripts still under review in the old OJS system?
Manuscripts currently under review in the old OJS system will continue their editorial process there until a final decision is reached. Authors involved will be contacted through that system. All accepted articles, regardless of submission path, will be published on our new official website.

Submission & Peer Review

What files do I need to prepare for submission?

You are required to upload TWO separate files:

1. Disclosed Manuscript (Main File): The complete manuscript for review including:

  • Cover Letter
  • Title Page (full author details, affiliations, ORCID, emails, corresponding author)
  • Abstract (max 300 words) and Keywords (max 8, separated by semicolon ;)
  • Main Text (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion)
  • Author Contributions
  • Conflicts of Interest statement
  • Acknowledgments (including funding sources)
  • Declaration of Generative AI Use (if applicable)
  • References
  • Tables and Figures (embedded in text)
  • Appendices (if any)

2. Anonymized Manuscript (Blinded File): Prepared for double-blind peer review with ALL author-identifying information removed:

  • No names or affiliations on title page or cover letter
  • No identifying text in acknowledgments (e.g., traceable grant numbers)
  • No self-citations that reveal author identity

What are the article categories/sections available?

Authors are required to select a category during submission in Editorial Manager. Available categories:

What types of manuscripts does Forest and Society accept?
We accept Original Research Articles, Review Papers, Policy Forum pieces, Notes from the Field, Methodological Engagement, Book Reviews, and Conference Reports. Detailed author guidelines are available on our website.
What is the peer review process?
Forest and Society employs a double-blind peer review process. Both reviewers and authors remain anonymous to each other. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two independent experts in the field.

Article Processing Charge (APC)

What is the APC for Forest and Society?

The standard Article Processing Charge (APC) is USD 400. This fee directly supports our capacity-building activities for early-career researchers, including writing workshops, research methodology training, and academic networking initiatives.

No payment is required at submission. The APC is invoiced only after a manuscript has been formally accepted for publication.

Are there any APC waivers or discounts?

Yes. The journal is committed to ensuring that ability to pay does not become a barrier to publication. Waivers and discounts are considered on a case-by-case basis for:

  • Graduate students (without grant support)
  • Researchers from low- and middle-income countries
  • Authors demonstrating genuine financial need

Copyright & Licensing

What is the copyright and licensing policy?
Forest and Society is a fully open access journal. Authors retain copyright of their work. All articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).
Does Forest and Society assign DOIs to articles?
Yes, all published articles are assigned a unique DOI through our Crossref membership. DOIs are automatically generated upon publication in the Digital Commons platform.

For Reviewers

How do I become a reviewer for Forest and Society?
We welcome qualified researchers to join our reviewer pool. Please contact the editorial office with your full name, affiliation, ORCID iD, and a list of your areas of expertise. We also frequently invite reviewers based on their publication record and expertise.
What guidelines should reviewers follow?
Our peer review guidelines and reviewer code of conduct are available on our website. Key principles include confidentiality, objectivity, timely submission, and declaring any potential conflicts of interest.
